What Is Spinal Anesthesia and How Is It Performed?

Spinal anesthesia is a commonly used anesthesia method in cesarean delivery. It can also be applied for some operations performed below waist and waist level.

The most preferred technique among regional anesthesia methods is spinal anesthesia.

The patient is seated before surgery to administer spinal anesthesia. The hard membrane called dura, in which the spinal cord and nerves are located, is passed and injected. With the effect of anesthesia, the lower chest area of the patient and the part up to the feet become numb.

Since the pains are not transmitted to the brain, the patient does not feel pain.

Thanks to spinal anesthesia, the mother can witness the first sound of her baby at birth as in normal birth. Spinal anesthesia is an anesthesia method that offers the advantages of normal delivery in cesarean deliveries.

What Are the Side Effects of Spinal Anesthesia?

Although rarely seen, after surgery;
Headache
Low back pain
Back pain
Trembling
Low blood pressure
Urinary retention
can be seen.

To Whom Spinal Anesthesia Is Not Applied?

Patients who do not want to apply;
In some skin diseases
Patients with blood clotting problems
People who use blood thinners
Having undergone herniated disc surgery at the level where infection or spinal anesthesia will be performed in and around the waist
This method is not preferred in patients with advanced heart failure.

What should be considered after cesarean delivery with spinal anesthesia?

Bed rest should be done as recommended by the physician, the head should not be moved too much.
It should be drunk plenty of fluids.

Painkillers and caffeine recommended by the physician should be used before the feeling of drowsiness is completely relieved.
